RESPECT- ethnic and world music festival 2004

This year's edition of the Respect festival again puts focus on variety and unites roots with contemporary. You will be served Southeast Asia delicatessen by the Vietnamese duo Khac Chi Ensemble and the steaming hot Caribbean merengue by the squeezbox master Joaquín Díaz from the Dominican republic. On top of that you can taste an ancient fusion, which matured and mellowed for 8 centuries in Gujarat, India. The ancestors of Sidi Goma were brought there from East Africa, and mix African drums with a Sufi ritual.
For dance maniacs there will be a generous helping of ethno-crossover. Sister India is led by the renowned DJ Ritu, who brings with her rappers and dancers from the Asian Underground, while Electric Gypsyland fuses the mean Gypsy fiddlers from Taraf de Haidouks with German-Moldovan DJ Shantel. For the devotees of desert blues, Des Voix Des Déserts blend Beduin music with oud and mandolin. Drummers, DJs and singer from Future World Funk will teach you how to cook a hot stew from the London melting pot. And for worshippers of the brave old world of punk-folk, the indestructible and everlasting enfant terrible of Irish music, Shane MacGowan, will come to Prague with his second band The Popes.
