MUSAFIR - Rajasthan Rajasthan, the province of India where this group comes from, is the ancient homeland of the Romany people. The music played by Musafir – Gypsies of Rajasthan is thus a distant cousin of the musical styles of European Romanies. Rajasthan is home to both Muslims and Hindus, who share many sacred places there in common. It even happens that pilgrims of both religions travel to one and the same temple. The musicians who perform for these pilgrims are mostly Hindus, which means that women can take part in their musical productions as well. These events often include snake-charmers, magicians, puppeteers, troubadours and fakirs, all of whom are also part of Musafir’s stage show, as anyone who saw their performance at Prague’s Akropolis in the summer of 1998 will surely remember. At Respect ‘99 Musafir will be presenting its new production, entitled "Rajasthan, Colorful Desert of India". The group is one of the stars of the current world music scene, and has given more than 300 performances since 1996, including appearances at prestigious festivals like Roskilde, Womad, Reading and others. Following its concert at Respect ‘99, Musafir will head for the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles and the Summer Stage in New York City’s Central Park. |
