Ensemble TARIT Tartit was originally formed in a refugee camp in Mauritania, where its members fled repression by the Malian army. Since 1995 the ensemble has performed regularly in Europe, touring last year with Kočani Orkestar. The men and women of Tartit (a word meaning "connection" or "bond") are Tuaregs of the Kel Antessar confederation, who reside in the Niger River basin and northern Mali. They are members of a race of desert nomads who have lived all over the African Sahara for thousands of years. Music and poetry enjoy a privileged place in Tuareg society and, despite the chaos brought to this region by our century, they have remained a permanent part of the Tuareg identity. The main emphasis is placed on singing, which is accompanied by simple instruments adapted to a nomadic way of life. These are made from objects of everyday use, which can revert to their original function afterwards. Women’s cries and the clapping of hands add to the rhythm, the element on which everything in the music of this people is based. |
