Tenores di Neoneli was founded in 1976 with the the purpose to preserve and boost ancient and specific singing – canto a tenore, Sardinian shepherds choir, since 2005 registered by UNESCO as an cultural heritage. The ensemble was found by Tonino Cau, the only living and still active member of the original ensemble. Tenores di Neoneli recorded many audio albums, they perfomed in many TV shows, and they had great media responses. The ensemble have performed around the world, they played almost 1,900 concerts.
The group also involved in a lot of original projects in cooperation with foreign and Sardinian artists. The most well-known collaborations are with Chieftains, Modena City Ramblers or Francesco Baccini.
The official anthem of Sardinia came from Tenores di Neoneli’s album Barones (song about great and famous Sardinians Gramsci and Emilio Lussu). In 2011 Tenores di Neoneli were honoured by “Cavalieri della Repubblica” for their merit in Sardinian culture. In 2021 Tenores di Neoneli were celebrating 45th anniversary.
