12tone, an expansion of sorts to the 2 Tone music of mixing Ska and Punk in the UK

With musical inspirations spanning the likes of Bob Marley, Fela Kuti, John Coltrane, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report, 4hero, Jaco Pastorius, Ali Farka Toure and Talking Heads, it's no wonder that United Vibrations are a musical force with a sound that has been hard to classify.

With musical inspirations spanning the likes of Bob Marley, Fela Kuti, John Coltrane, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report, 4hero, Jaco Pastorius, Ali Farka Toure and Talking Heads, it’s no wonder that United Vibrations are a musical force with a sound that has been hard to classify.
Bassist and vocalist Kareem Dayes notes, “We understand that nothing is truly original and every note we ever play is coming from or inspired by someone who came before us. That is the beauty of music, language, and the human canon.” For a young group, that is a mature and satisfying stance.
Consisting of brothers Ahmad, Kareem, and Yussef Dayes and Wayne Francis II, the band likes to describe their sound as 12tone, an expansion of sorts to the 2 Tone music of mixing Ska and Punk in the UK. With that in mind, they have mixed styles from the world over. Kareem further explains, “It’s a reference to the harmonic expression we feel jazz musicians were never credited enough for doing in the world of music academia.”
