Martin Klapper and Roger Turner - an enchanting fusion of two explosive sonic microstructures, continuously and unexpectedly transforming dynamics from subtle rasp to thunderous noise. The concert will include a screening of two multi-screen Super 8 films by Martin Klapper: DOUBLE VISION (1993-99) and TWIN SCRATCH (2017), both of which are Czech premieres. Projection and manipulation by Martin Ježek.
Martin Klapper is a Czech improviser, performer and multimedia artist living in Denmark since the 1980s. He has collaborated with many of the world’s top musicians, including John Butcher, Derek Bailey, Davey Williams, Steve Beresford, Eugene Chadbourne, Raymond Stride, and his experimental films have been screened at numerous European and American festivals. His work primarily uses unconventional sources of sound: mechanical and electronic toys, children’s musical instruments, recycled electronic devices, dictaphones, household objects and self-made instruments.
Roger Turner is undoubtedly one of the most important British “improvising music” musicians since the mid-1970s. His virtuosity as a player is as stunning as it is indescribably entertaining, an exquisite combination of eruptive power perfectly matched with finely honed precision. He has worked as an improvising drummer and percussionist since the early 1970s, and has collaborated in many established and ad hoc configurations. His solo work, work with electroacoustic ensembles and open-form songs, extensive work with dance and visual artists, plus specific jazz ensembles, have brought collaborations with some of the most exciting international musicians and performers from Annette Peacock to Phil Minton, Cecil Taylor, Masahiko Satoh, Charles Gayle, Lola Coxhill, Derek Bailey, Otom Yoshihide, Alan Silva, Keith Rowe, Josef Nadja, Min Tanaka, Toshinori Kondo, Axel Dorner, etc. etc. He has toured and performed all over the world from Sydney to the Arctic, Tokyo to Belfast, New York to Beirut.
The Klapper-Turner duo recorded the album Recent Croaks (ACTA) at Prague’s club Delta, which was rated by WIRE magazine as one of the best recordings of 1998, and Derek Bailey described them as “very inventive colleagues”.
