Behind the English first names are two master musicians playing the two most iconic instruments of Indian classical music: the sitar and the tabla. It was the mesmerising interplay between the tabla drums and the gliding tones of the sitar that once captivated George Harrison. He became a student of the legendary virtuoso Ravi Shankar, who brought Indian ragas to the stages of Woodstock and the Monterey Pop Festival, and also performed at the Prague Spring Festival. Musical perception, however, has changed dramatically over the past half-century. Rather than updating the classical tradition with production tricks, Tony & Billa have chosen an organic approach. They condense hour-long ragas into eight-minute performances without sacrificing their depth. They highlight delicate glissandi and ornamental phrases that function as musical "springboards", making Indian classical music more accessible to Western audiences while preserving its improvisational tension. In doing so, they compress the musical timeline much as time itself has become compressed in everyday life. "Tony" Ashraf Sharif Khan comes from Lahore, Pakistan, a city whose cultural heritage is deeply intertwined with that of India, and belongs to a musical lineage spanning nine generations. "Billa" Shahbaz Hussain was born into the South Asian community in England and studied with some of the greatest tabla masters of the twentieth century.

A cornerstone of North Indian classical music is the gharana system: traditional musical lineages, each distinguished by its own artistic philosophy, style, ornamentation, rhythmic language and aesthetic values. Closely connected to musical families and clans, each gharana nurtures a shared musical sensibility and performance technique among its members. “Tony” Ashraf Sharif Khan was trained in the renowned Poonch gharana, which originated in what is now Kashmir. He has performed publicly since the age of eleven, received numerous international honours, and has lived in Hamburg and Oslo since 2000. “Billa” Shahbaz Hussain studied under leading masters of the Punjab gharana, the same lineage that produced Zakir Hussain, who co-founded the legendary group Shakti with John McLaughlin. Tony and Billa first met in England in 2006. Both hold the title Ustad, the Pakistani equivalent of the Western honorific Maestro. As a gesture of openness towards international audiences, however, they chose to set aside both their honorific titles and their long, unfamiliar names in favour of the memorable stage name Tony & Billa. Over the past two decades, they have become regular headline artists at Pakistan’s leading classical music festivals.
