The Norwegian psych-jazz group Møster! is led by saxophonist Kjetil Møster (e.g. The End with Mats Gustafsson, singer Sofia Jernberg’s Eroica I), joined by guitarist Hans Magnus “Snah” Ryan (Motorpsycho), bassist Nikolai Hængsle (Elephant9, Needlepoint) and drummer Kenneth Kapstad (Spidergawd, ex-Motorpsycho).

Møster! formed in 2010, combining free jazz, psychedelic rock, electronic abstraction and cinematic sound design. The intensity of their improvisations recalls mid-’60s Coltrane and ’70s Miles Davis, but filtered through the raw energy of Can and Soft Machine, the electroacoustic music of Stockhausen and Luc Ferrari, and the hypnotic, hour-long jams of Fela Kuti. Over more than 15 years of playing together, Møster! have developed a distinctive, unmistakable sound that seems to inhabit a musical universe of its own.

Kjetil Møster has been one of the pioneering musicians and improvisers on the Norwegian scene since the early 2000s. He first came to wider attention through his work with the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra alongside Chick Corea, and in the years that followed as co-leader of several bands, including Ultralyd, Zanussi 5 and The Core. In 2006, he received the “International Jazz Talent of the Year” award. He then took a break from the jazz scene for several years, touring with the well-known electro-rock group Datarock. He returned to the more experimental music scene in 2010, when he founded Møster!

Today, he co-leads The End with Mats Gustafsson, performs in singer Sofia Jernberg’s Eroica I quartet, plays in Trelldom led by Gaahl, and performs the music of Øyvind Torvund with symphony orchestras across Europe. He is also a member of Gard Nilssen’s Acoustic Unity and Supersonic Orchestra.
