ĽUDOVÁ HUDBA JULIUSA ŠUKA BARTOŠA

This group is one of the biggest attractions at the evening dance parties held during folk festivals in eastern Slovakia. The leader of the band, fiddler Julius _uk Barto_, is also chief of the Romany settlement of Medvedovo in the town of _iern_ Balog in central Slovakia. His L'udová hudba ("folk band") first performed in Prague as part of the "United Colours of Akropolis" series.

"This is one of the oldest Romany folk bands in Slovakia, and it has maintained its unique, unmistakable sound over the decades. The musicians' approach to folk material is hard to categorize; it is does not belong to any of the established traditions. Rather, it is the earthiest, most powerful music to have been produced by the rough territory lying below Pol'ana Mountain in this century. The band, headed by the now 65-year-old Barto_, also features two of his sons, and offers temperament, distinctive melodies, powerful rhythms, explosive energy and originality in abundance. Their performances at dance parties during the largest folklore festivals in Slovakia - V_chodná and Detva - are always eagerly awaited, and not just by devotees of traditional folk music alone."
