Canadian Superstar with Haitian Roots

The Black singer from francophone Montreal builds on the finest traditions of jazz and blues history. She openly embraces the legacy of Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, and R&B icon Etta James, while her voice also carries the subtle sharpness of the legendary Nigerian singer Sade. Her songs are driven by growing emotional tension and intimate, intense arrangements for guitar and keyboards. Two of her albums have won the Juno Award, the Canadian equivalent of the Grammy Awards. Dominique Fils-Aimé has appeared at numerous prestigious events, including the North Sea Jazz Festival in 2025 — Europe’s premier jazz showcase — and Japan’s World Expo 2025 in Osaka, where she performed five concerts representing Canadian culture. In Prague, she will present her latest breakthrough album, My World Is The Sun, whose opening track was inspired by a cassette recording of her mother singing in the 1970s, before Dominique herself was even born.

A number of musicians from the French-speaking Caribbean have settled in francophone Canada. Singer Malika Tirolien from Guadeloupe, known for her collaborations with Bokanté and Snarky Puppy, performed in Prague two years ago. Like Dominique Fils-Aimé, she shares African roots, yet the two artists differ significantly in musical approach. Tirolien favors a fuller accompaniment with a pronounced funk sound, whereas Fils-Aimé excels in an intimate, minimalist setting. Dominique Fils-Aimé recalls making her very first recording at the age of twelve using a telephone answering machine. She never received formal academic vocal training, which she considers an advantage. It allows her to rely more on the emotional than the physical possibilities of her voice. “For me, it’s more important to share emotion in its purest form, even if it may not be technically perfect.”

Her first albums form a trilogy. The debut Nameless (2018) carries a blues-infused atmosphere and reflects on painful memories from the past. The follow-up Stay Tuned! (2019) is a call for revolution and won the 2020 Juno Award for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year. A year later, she concluded the trilogy with Three Little Words (2021), an album centered on reconciliation. The new album My World Is The Sun (2026) marks a milestone in her artistic development. Most of the recordings were created live in the studio. Critics have described the album as a turning point, where the singer no longer feels the need to prove herself. The music is warmer and more personal than her earlier work, and she shows greater courage in taking artistic risks. Among the highlights is the nearly nine-minute-long “Rhythm of Nature,” in which she gradually builds a powerful spiritual atmosphere step by step. “The River,” accompanied by piano, carries an almost gospel-like mood, culminating in a magical yet understated trumpet solo.
