FIRE! is a Nordic experimental superpower trio consisting of Mats Gustafsson (saxophone), Johan Berthling (bass guitar) and Andreas Werlin (drums). Perhaps the best known and most active member of FIRE! is Mats Gustafsson, a Swedish free jazz saxophonist, improviser and composer. His wide range of work includes free jazz, rock, electronica, noise and collaborations with theatre and dance companies. He has more than 250 albums and over 2000 concerts worldwide. He has worked with artists such as Sonic Youth, Faust, Dälek, Peter Brotzmann, Joe Mc Phee, Neneh Cherry, Ken Vandermark, The Ex, Merzbow, Christian Marclay, Otomo Yoshihide, among others.
FIRE! creates a new approach to improvised music, which is a synthesis of post-rock, free jazz, psychedelic rock and noise influences. After their debut album You Liked Me Five Minutes Ago (2009) they have collaborated with such names as Jim O’Rourke, Oren Ambarchi, Stephen O’Malley and David Sandström. In 2013, they added 28 more musicians and the result was their first album FIRE! Orchestra’s first album “Exit!”. With this line-up, the band released 4 more albums before returning to their power trio roots – saxophone, bass, drums – on their latest album Testament (2024). And it is with this raw album, produced by the master of sound Steve Albini and one of their most acclaimed, that FIRE! comes to Prague.
