House of Waters

USA, Japan | R+

A unique instrumental jazz ecstasy performed on dulcimer, six-string bass, and drums.

The trio House of Waters—unique both in their instrumental lineup and artistic focus (dulcimer, bass, drums)—has released 11 albums, earned a Grammy nomination, toured as the opening act for the superband Snarky Puppy, and features jazz guitar legend Mike Stern as a guest on their latest album.

Originally from Japan and now based in New York, Moto Fukushima is a world-class master of the six-string bass guitar. He studied jazz improvisation, Western classical music, and Latin American music. His bandmate Max ZT, who has Czech roots, is a virtuoso of the hammered dulcimer, a portable predecessor of the Hungarian cimbalom. He studied the music of West African griots in Senegal and was a student in India of Shivkumar Sharma, who became for the Asian santur the same defining authority that Ravi Shankar was for the sitar. Max ZT has developed his own, technically unparalleled playing technique, earning him the nickname “the Jimi Hendrix of the dulcimer” from critics.

The result is delicate yet explosive instrumental music that guides the listener along intricate paths between hushed passages and moments of musical ecstasy.
