Nordic mysticism with a jazz feeling / trip hop, advanced pop, jazz

Europe has never had its Joni Mitchell, but it does offer a wide array of Scandinavian jazz, documented by ECM and other elite labels. Josefine Lindstrand, known for her collaboration with Czech guitarist David Dorůžka and his international trio (Silently Dawning, Animal Music 2008, Anděl Award for Best Jazz Record of the Year), stands, like her Scandinavian colleague Björk, at the crossroads of genres. Her music combines a jazz foundation with a sense of fragile but powerful and engaging melody. In addition to singing, she is also a strong composer and arranger. When she writes for a large orchestra, the result is surprisingly delicate and intimate. Her latest album Mirages By The Lake is a celebration of Nordic nature and mysticism. Josefine returns to her childhood and to an untamed rural landscape dominated by dark forests, cold and mysterious lakes, treacherous streams and waterfalls.

Josefine Lindstrand began her creative career at the age of 20 when she was discovered by the British pianist and bandleader Django Bates. With his group Human Chain she performed at major European festivals (The North Sea Jazz, Oslo Jazzfestival, etc.). In 2007 she was offered the role of Desdemona in the adaptation of Othello by the American pianist Uri Caine in Vienna and San Francisco. This was soon followed by a collaboration with Czech guitarist David Dorůžka and his international trio, with concerts in Poland and the Czech Republic. Together they recorded the highly acclaimed album Silently Dawning with lyrics in English, Czech and Swedish. In 2015, she received her first major offer for music for a large orchestra, which was the Norrbotten Big Band from Sweden. The result was the album While we sleep, which won the prestigious Jazzkatten award from Swedish Radio in the category Best Composer of 2017. This opened up a series of other opportunities for her to compose for choirs, jazz big bands and films. Her fifth and so far last album is called Mirages By The Lake. The word mirage is an umbrella term for optical illusions caused jointly by the weather and the malleability of the landscape, and includes a fata morgana.
