The versatile guitarist and producer is well known for his projects JuJu, Les Triaboliques and the duo Justin Adams / Mauro Durante. His latest project is the quartet Lifting Spirits, which he founded together with master Gnawa musician Mohamed Errebbaa. The repetitive bass figures, the sharp rhythmic accompaniment of brass percussion, together with Adams' guitar become the decisive force of an ancient trance ritual.
English guitarist Justin Adams is well known for his work with Robert Plant’s band or producing desert blues with Tinariwen. He has performed at Respect festival many times, e.g. with Les Triaboliques or with Mauro Durant. This time he will bring Gnawa rituals that originated during the slavery era. In this genre, Mohamed Errebaa is one of the most sought-after players. He has been performing since he was 10 years old, and at the age of 28, he received the Maalem master title, which entitles him to lead the all-night Lila rituals. These include the crisp rhythmic accompaniment of the qraqeb brass percussion, in addition to the chanting, repetitive bass figures of the guimbri. These become a decisive force in the climactic moments of the ritual, putting the listener into a trance.
