Gnawa Halwa

Besides (and before) America, black slaves were also brought to Morocco. While in United States they invented the blues, the Moroccan blacks play ritual trance music. The name Gnawa is used both for style and musicians, who participate in spiritual brotherhoods, and take part in all night lila sessions, featuring acrobatic dancing, walking on red hot coal, and knife throwing. A sacred, bass-like instrument sintir is used to cure mental illness and scorpio poisoning. Gnawa Halwa consist of master musicians from Marrakesh, originally discovered by the producer Bill Laswell.
