Gnawa Impulse

The Moroccan members of the band were born in Marrakesh and belong to the Gnawa spiritual brotherhood. They participated in breakthrough recording Night Spirit Masters, in 1990 with producers Bill Laswell and Richard Horowitz. Later they worked with Randy Weston, Gnawa Diffusion; as Gnawa Halwa, they perform authentic Gnawa music with indigenous instruments. They still divide their time between touring and living within their traditional brotherhood, in Marrakesh.

For additional information on Gnawa rituals see the Gnawa Halwa biography.

The European part of the setup consist of musicians from Berlin. David Beck has been playing guitar since 1978 and approached various styles. He had also explored other instruments (drums, string & wind instruments) and has composed for theatre, circus (Ufa Fabrik Shows) and television (ZDF), he was the guitarist of the famous Berlin band Luchten (Funk Metal Jazz - German winner of Yamaha Band Explosion 1992 - three CDs - Concerts in Germany, Japan, France).

Jan Claudius Rase makes a living from music as a saxophonist and keyboard player since 1989. He played in several jazz and pop bands and brought the lively jazzy touch to the Luchten band. He works as studio musician (Mellowbag, Seeed, Genetic Drugs/Asian Breakbeats) and as producer for theatre and movie soundtracks. He is a great sound-engineer and has travelled a lot in India where he began to play Bansuri (Indian bamboo flute). The original Live remixes tapes featured also the Lebanese drummer Oli El Safadi, another former member of Leuchten; the current drummer of Gnawa Impulse is another Berlin musician Stefan Hauser.
